How to Photograph Same-Sex Couples
LGBTQIA+ photography has been the most rewarding experience
of my photography career. In Capturing Unconventional Headshots, I mentioned the pros and cons of branding
yourself as a LGBTQIA+ Photographer.
If you decide to break into this market, you won’t be
sorry.
Same-sex couples don’t always feel safe when contacting
wedding planning services, because they don’t know how their sexual orientation
will be received.
Establishing yourself as an ally photographer, couples know
where you stand, and that they will be received with professionalism, support, & love.
Make the most of your
same-sex engagement photo session by using appropriate poses, coordinating outfits,
choosing location, & offering up plenty of encouragement.
How to Photograph Same-Sex Couples – Poses
Before arriving at a same-sex engagement session, you must
have lots of appropriate poses in your arsenal. Especially if you have never taken on a session
like this before.
You can’t go in and assume a feminine and masculine partner,
and pose them as such.
That’s offensive and can leave a bad taste in your client’s
mouth.
Instead, go for non-gendered poses that simply encourage love
to shine through.
Advising your clients on outfit decisions beforehand can help
engagement sessions go smoothly.
Some people try too hard to match, and end up looking like
siblings.
But don’t be afraid to get creative with color stories and
matching accessories.
How to Photograph Same-Sex Couples - Location
Picking a location is a crucial decision your clients and
you must make. If you plan out outfits that are neon colors, but are out in a wooded area, your subjects will look out of place.
You can either chose the location first, then plan the
outfit to fit. Or chose the outfits, and find a location to fit. These decisions
must be made in tandem.
How to Photograph Same-Sex Couples – Encouragement
Some same-sex couples have received hateful comments or
actions when expressing their affections in public. This causes some couples to
be more reserved, or even scared.
For your photos to look and feel natural, you have to make
your subjects feel comfortable.
Do this by offering up constant encouragement. Tell them how
great they look or how much you love taking their photos.
How to Photograph Same-Sex Couples– Don’t push additional
services
When you are taking engagement photos it is so TACKY to solicit
your services for the couple’s wedding during the shoot.
If, once they get your photos back, they decide they want to
hire you for their wedding – great!
If not, you have a beautiful engagement session to promote
your business with.
How to Photograph Same-Sex Couples – Final Thoughts
Engagement photos are a wonderful way to capture the love (any) two people have for each other. Just remember:
- Don’t rely on ring shots
- Don't be afraid to ask questions
- Be prepared for lots of feedback
Love is love, always.
Happy Shooting!
